I have travelled fairly far and wide, and experienced quite a fair share of good food from different culture and origins. But I still, and will always, have a soft spot for the traditional Kampua noodle of my Sibu hometown. There are several food outlets operating in the Klang Valley that also serve this mee and other Foochow delicacies, and I have tried almost all of them.

There’s Ling Leh Kee in Kepong, Aunty Christina and Slurrp in the Petaling Jaya area. Among these and others, I believe the most authentic is Ling Leh Kee, owned by Michael Ling, a friendly young entrepreneur from Sibu. However, when it comes to true authenticity, I feel that nothing beats going back to Sibu and having the Kampua in a local eatery.

Here in this pic, some of my old schoolmates from Sacred Heart Secondary School brought me to this coffee shop near the bus terminal in Sibu. It was a great breakfast, since the Kampua mee came with a generous portion of pork lard, pig liver and other condiments.

It might not be easy to articulate, but there is something special about eating the meal that made up a good part of our childhood. And it’s even more tastefully nostalgic when we are enjoying it in the place and with the people we grew up with.
