Our public listed education company SEG International Berhad (SEGi) has just announced the appointment of Tun Mohd Raus Sharif as its new non- executive chairman of the board of directors. He replaces Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin, who has been with SEGi as our well respected board member since 2001. At a recent lunch (top pic) I had with Tun Raus and our mutual friend Datuk Wira Vincent Lye, we shared ideas and opinions on the rapidly changing education landscape. Subsequently, upon his appointment, he took a tour of SEGi University’s main campus and met with key management personnel (bottom pic).

Tun Raus retired as the 14th Chief Justice of Malaysia several years ago and is now involved in some corporate and advisory work. I have to say he looks very good at 74 years old, keeping healthy with his golf games. People will find him sharp, critical and concise, as he was during his distinguished tenure in the judiciary. We’re confident his coming onboard will bolster our Group’s governance and oversight capabilities.

I find it expansive to be having conversations with people with varied experiences and expertise, especially civil servants, politicians or entrepreneurs who have retired but are keeping abreast of the latest going-ons. They are the ones with the monumental words of wisdom to impart, gained through their many years of trials and tribulations. Bright minds light the fire. Seasoned ones like Tun Raus’ will help to keep it burning through the storms if and when they occur.
