Learning is not limited to the classroom. SEGi College Penang recently demonstrated this through an educational visit to the historic Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, aimed at providing students with a deeper understanding of heritage conservation.
Attended by students from the Cultural Studies (TOU3123N) and Heritage Management (TLH104) programmes, the visit was organised by Mr. Muhamad Irfan bin Bustaipo and focused on Penang’s rich architectural heritage.
The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, also known as the Blue Mansion, is a renowned historical building in George Town, Penang. This architectural gem, commissioned in the late 19th century by the influential Chinese businessman Cheong Fatt Tze, is famous for its distinctive indigo-blue colour.
The mansion’s rich history and unique design elements made it an ideal site for students to explore the tangible connections between the past and the present.
Upon arrival, students were warmly welcomed by Madam Lin Lee Loh-Lim, who provided an overview of the mansion’s history, architectural features, and significance in Penang’s heritage landscape.
The guided tour included visits to various rooms and courtyards, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship and unique design elements of the building. Interactive sessions were conducted to actively engage students in discussions about the historical context of the mansion and the challenges faced in heritage preservation.
This visit aligns seamlessly with SEGi College Penang’s curriculum and educational objectives, providing students with an immersive experience that extends beyond textbooks.
The interactive sessions highlighted the interconnectedness between heritage preservation and various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). These discussions fostered a deeper understanding of how cultural heritage contributes to sustainable urban development and community well-being.
The educational visit to the Blue Mansion underscored the importance of preserving cultural landmarks amidst modern development. By integrating heritage education with the SDGs, SEGi College Penang is preparing its students to become stewards of cultural preservation and sustainability in their communities.
This initiative not only enhances students’ appreciation for cultural heritage but also inspires them to contribute to the achievement of global sustainability goals.
The experience at the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion provided invaluable insights and sparked meaningful discussions among students about the role of heritage conservation in achieving the SDGs.
Through this visit, SEGi College Penang continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing quality education that empowers students to make a positive impact on society.
